SUMMARY:d@rts in Oulu: Dialogues in Deep Listening
DESCRIPTION:dialoguing@rts in Oulu\, European Capital of Culture 2026\nTwo
evenings exploring intercultural dialogue through immersive sound and livi
ng musical traditions.\n22 June 2026 19:30-21:00 Oulu Music Center - Madet
oja Hall\nCONNECTION - A Spatial Sound Concert\, Meditation Journey and Fi
nnish Sonic Ritual\nCONNECTION is an immersive event that brings together
spatial sound performance\, meditative listening practices\, and inspirati
on drawn from Finnish sonic traditions. Through deep listening\, intuitive
improvisation\, and immersive sound environments\, the audience is invite
d into a shared experience where music becomes a vehicle for contemplation
\, presence\, and expanded states of awareness.\n\nAt the heart of the eve
ning is a dialogue between tradition and innovation. Spanish world jazz mu
sician Javier Sánchez Pérez (Cuejero)\, enters into dialogue with the Fi
nnish duo hakosalo_tuohino\, whose work centres on the kantele – the nat
ional instrument of Finland – and its transformation into immersive spat
ial sound environments. Jazz improvisation on double bass interacts with F
innish folk textures and electroacoustic soundscapes.\n\nA special dimensi
on of CONNECTION lies in the story behind the collaboration itself. The pa
rticipating artists first met through the Horizon Europe project dialoguin
g@rts that explores artistic dialogues and intercultural exchanges through
collaborative practices. Over the past weeks\, they have developed their
artistic relationship through the project’s digital playground\, sharing
ideas\, sonic experiments\, and creative processes across geographical di
stances.\n\nCONNECTION marks the first time that Javier Sanchez Perez and
the duo hakosalo_tuohino meet and perform together in person. This premier
e collaboration takes place at the Oulu Music Center\, where their virtual
exchanges are transformed into a live\, immersive experience. The perform
ance itself becomes an embodiment of the project’s vision: connecting ar
 tists\, traditions\, technologies\, and audiences across borders through s
hared creative exploration.\n\nArtists:\n\n Javier Sánchez Pérez (Cueje
ro) is a musician whose artistic work focuses on the dialogue between fla
menco and Nordic jazz. He graduated from Berklee College of Music and hold
s a Master’s degree from the Sibelius Academy in Finland and the Royal A
cademy of Music in Denmark. Javier is currently a PhD researcher at the Un
iversity of Helsinki\, his research focuses on transcultural pedagogies an
d collaborative learning in music education. His teaching and artistic pra
ctice emphasise intercultural collaboration\, communication across discipl
ines\, and the creative potential of musical dialogue.javiersanchezperez.c
om\n hakosalo_tuohino is an electroacoustic duo of Osmo Hakosalo (kantele
) and Jussi Tuohino (computer). Using the kantele as their sole sound sour
ce\, they combine extended playing techniques with real-time digital proce
ssing to create immersive\, evolving soundscapes that reveal new dimension
 s of the instrument.Drawing on backgrounds in folk\, classical\, jazz\, an
d electronic music\, the duo performs through free improvisation\, allowin
g each performance to emerge in response to the moment. Their work often i
ncorporates surround sound and site-specific sonic environments\, includin
 g field recordings from Arctic landscapes.Founded in Oulu\, Finland\, in 2
024\, hakosalo_tuohino has performed internationally at festivals includin
g Gothenburg Fringe Festival\, Guelph Jazz Festival Colloquium\, Jauna Muz
ika Festival\, and Tallinn Music Week. In 2025\, they released their debut
album\, Live at Muhos\, documenting their spontaneous and immersive appro
 ach to sound.https://www.hakosalotuohino.com\n\n24 June 2026 19:00-21:00 O
ulu Music Center - Madetoja Hall\nYoik\, Memory and Contemporary Sound
\nAn intimate concert with Norwegian composer\, musician and Southern Sám
i yoiker Frode Fjellheim\, internationally known for bringing yoik to new
audiences\, including through Vuelie\, the opening music of Disney's Froze
 n. Fjellheim creates a powerful meeting place between Sámi tradition\, co
ntemporary soundscapes and cultural memory.\n\nThe concert is followed by
a public conversation with Fjellheim and d@rts experts on the transmission
of indigenous artistic traditions across generations\, addressing questio
ns of cultural ownership\, authority\, context and responsibility — maki
ng this an event that is as intellectually engaged as it is artistically p
owerful.\n\nThe panel discussion will involve: Rosemary Kate Martin - Dean
at Nord University as moderator and as participants: Frode Fjellheim - ar
tist\, Alison Fox - Professor Of Collaborative Ethical Research and Practi
